I see that every time I hit send/receive I download another group of mail. I don't really need this old mail. Any way I can just get my new mail from here on out?

Oh, I do see that I am only getting some old mail though, nothing new. I received mail from Jan 2007 to Feb 2008. Isn't that strange?

Yes, that account definitely appears to be enabled for POP.
When you click Send/Receive, does it appear to go though the motions
of contacting the server? Does it respond with a status message of
"No new messages" in the lower right corner?
Make sure the account is enabled for checking:
Tools, Accounts, select that account, Properties. On the General tab
make sure "Include this account..." is checked.

as being enabled but the radio button no long shows filled. I believe this
is okay even though it does not match your screen link. Here is what it
says:
1. Status: POP is enabled for all mail that has arrived since 10/21/07
Enable POP for all mail (even mail that's already been downloaded)
Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on
Disable POP
2. When messages are accessed with POP keep Gmail's copy in the Inboxarchive

Make sure you have the POP option enabled at Gmail:

Well, I didn't get the error, but I also haven't gotten any messages in my
in box, though I've received mail in my gmail.

Go to Tools, Accounts, select that mail account, Properties, Servers.
Uncheck the box for "Log on using Secure Password Authentication."

I noticed I didn't have the box checked to receive so I checked in and am
now getting this error message.

I am getting no errors. The send/receive flashes so quickly, I assumed
it
was doing what it was supposed to do. Any way I can slow that down to
see
if it is displaying a message that I'm not getting or do you think it is
sending/receiving if it is moving quickly and sending no error that I can
see?

Do you get an error message when you try to receive? If so,
right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply
here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

Did you enable Gmail's POP option like it says to do in the

Thanks Dave and Richard,
I have updated the settings as you suggested. I am not able to
send,
but don't seem to be receiving yet. I've hit SEND/RECIEVE a few
times and this does appear to be successful but nothing comes in.
I
did receive messages in my Gmail account however.

It's not clear which program you wish to use, Windows Mail or
Windows Live Mail.
However, to access Gmail, you need to enable POP on the server,
and
follow these directions...

I tried to set up my mail system, but keep having problems. I
am
unable to send or receive.
I finally downloaded the Windows Live as it was recommended in
the
help section.
(FYI - I am running Vista Ultimate and would like my Gmail
account
to be
fed into Windows Mail). Anyway, the help section said it would
take care of
all my errors and problems for me by setting up my account for me
when I
downloaded Windows Live. Good deal, huh? Didn't work though.
When I open
Windows Mail I immediately get the following error messages:
The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might
not
be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving
this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and
read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help
determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service
provider.
