Re: mail not sending but receiving mail

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Gary;

Let's see if I have this straight:

<I am using Outlook 2003>

1- At home my ISP and mail server (Verizon) lets pass any outbound mail
from Outlook with port 25 specified because the provided IP address is
for a Verizon smtp server? (1-a Actually since Verizon is not on the
list of ISPs blocking port 25 yet, they are probably ignoring the whole
IP/PORT number?)

2- On the road (my brothers house) his ISP (AT&T) rejects any outbound
mail from OUTLOOK with port 25 specified IF the provided IP address is
for other than AT&T SMTP server? (2-a Which means that AT&T is scanning
all my traffic??)

Gary VanderMolen I didn't say that Verizon is doing the blocking. You
said the problem
only happens when visiting your brother. I assume he has an ISP
other than Verizon. *That* ISP (like most ISPs) will not take kindly
to your attempt to use a port 25 SMTP server other than their own.

Incidentally, it is customary in newsgroups to quote the message
one is replying to. It makes for better continuity.

Sorry to be so thick but;

I had considered the port being blocked but discounted it. If
outgoing.verizon.net:25 is blocked by verizon, then how is it
possible
for me to send emails from home? After all, wouldn't the mail I sent
from home also be blocked?

Gary VanderMolen The type of Internet connection or router does not
matter.
The difference between Verizon and Gmail is that the former
uses port 25, while the latter uses port 465. Port 25 is
usually blocked when away from one's home ISP. For more
on this policy see:
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/P..._Blocking.aspx

The available workarounds when sending away from home are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Ask your home ISP if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP.
3. If you use the same away-from-home connection frequently, substitute
the SMTP
server belonging to that connection. This is a bit tricky, but if you
want to go that
route, I can provide more details.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, get a free Gmail
account,
configure it for POP access, and use it for your sending chores.
Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked like port 25 is.

I have this problem with the "outgoing.verizon.net" SMTP server.
BTW;
the incoming is a usually (always?) a POP3 server; the outgoing is
usually (always?) an SMTP server based on my experience with Verizon
and
GMAIL settings.

This problem ONLY occurs with my brother's setup . I am visiting the
bozo for the holidays. At home I have the Verizon/FOIS provided
router.

I access my email both with a DELL640m WIDOWS/XP AVG/Zonealarm, no
mcfool, etc. and my XV6800 Mobile Windows PC/phone. (Not really
relevant, but I thought I would prevent some emails.)

SO; this setup works at home and every FREE WI-FI hot-spot between
NJ
and CA. (slight exaggeration).

HE HAS A DSL CONNECTION THROUGH A NETGEAR WNR834B WIRELESS ROUTER.
So I have been focusing on the router setup. But here is the catch:
My
GMAIL/SMTP/OUTGOING works just dandy. Just the VERIZON/SMTP/OUTGOING
doesn't. I have spoken to Verizon and they say its the other guys
fault. (This is why mainframe commercial shops try to stick with one
vendor.)

Any ideas as to what settings I should look at on the Router? on
Verizon?

thanks
