Re: Managing contacts

The question about whether you can use Outlook Express in Vista
has been answered here numerous times. The answer is still no. :-(

Contact Groups in Windows Live Mail are somewhat more flexible
than they are in Windows Mail.

How do you group contacts? I have over 200 contacts and I would like to
group them in categories such as "work", "friends", "family", "doctors",
etc.
I started grouping them into newly created folders, however when I press on
Create Mail/To....all my contacts are in view. I would like to see the
categories rather than all at once. Any help would be appreciated.

It's a horrible Windows mistake. I have about 200 contacts in my
own contacts folder. I created category folders and filled them with
their respective contacts but Windows Mail will not recognize them.
When I open my contacts folder to pick an email recipient address, my
contact category folders do not appear. Instead I still see all 200
contacts with no differentiation.

Windows mail support told me to create category icons within the
contacts folder, and drag the contacts into the appropriate icons.
They are not folders, they are icons representing the categories desired.
They are supposed to make it easy to select a category icon which
will add all addresses in that category to an email recipient list.
But the icon appears in the email, not the individuals represented,
so I can't see them to be certain that they are there, and I can't
deselect some individuals that I don't want to send the email to.

Now when I open the contacts folder, I still see all 200 contacts,
plus the added category icons. I can open an icon to see the
names in it, but the email addresses associated with those names
do not appear there. They are still in the full 200-address list.
Windows mail support told me I can put the full information for
each addressee in the icon, then delete the explicit addresses from
the main contacts folder, resulting in a contacts folder containing
only category icons. But the addresses can not be dragged into
the icon - all 200 addresses must be manually transcribed.

It sucks big time. I asked in this newsgroup if I could use
Outlook Express in Vista, but no one had an answer. I'm looking
for some alternative.

Good luck.

Rodan.
