Disappearing Mail

I've got a strange problem receiving mail on my new 32 bit Dell Inspiron
D530 desk top pc running Vista with Service Pack 1 installed. I'm in
the process of slowly moving data over from my old pc which ran Win 98SE
with Rel 6 of Outlook Express to my new Dell pc. Since I have only one
high speed cable coming into my house I have to move it from one machine
to the other when I work with mail or the internet on either pc. I use
the same email address on both machines.
I have a message in the inbox on the old machine that I wanted to move
over to my new one so I decided to forward it. I waited a few seconds
for the send to execute and then turned the modem off and switched the
cable to my new pc. I waited a while, turned the modem on, and then
went to Vista mail to receive my incoming mail. The message I forwarded
came in to the in box but then disappeared! It was there all of about
two seconds and then evaporated. I looked among my various mail folders
but couldn't find it. Can any one explain what happened? I have a
hunch that this has something to do with the fact that it was in the
inbox of the old machine when I sent it. I say this because I had
previously migrated my various mail folders from my old pc to the new
one and the all transferred successfully except the inbox folder. It
just did not transfer and there was no error message or anything to
indicate why it didn't. So perhaps they are related to the same
problem? And how do I get around this problem?
Thanks...
