Uninstalling Norton (followed up by that cleanup tool) is only a test
to determine if Norton really is the culprit. If there is no change in your
Windows Mail, you can reinstall Norton. If there is improvement,
you have two choices:
a) Install one of the more compatible free antivirus programs.
We can recommend specific ones when you are ready for that step.
or
b) Upgrade your Windows Mail to Windows Live Mail (WLM), then
reinstall Norton. WLM is less prone to suffering bad effects from
overly aggressive antivirus programs.

I have been trying to find out what the problem is since May. I went to all.
the discussion groups about the error # I was getting and followed their
instructions. The last one told me to uncheck all the secure connection
options. When I did that it stopped giving the error messages but still
would not connect. Thats when I searched not being able to send and receive.
That brought me here. I will try uninstalling Norton but what do I do then?

First of all, you should not change settings in your email program
unless your mail provider specifically supports that new setting.
If in doubt, ask here first.
If you are not getting any error messages, but your Windows Mail
is not working, it is probably caused by your antivirus program.
Norton is one of the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
To prove that it is indeed the culprit, uninstall Norton, and follow up
with their debris removal tool:

Alternatively, you could upgrade to Windows Live Mail, because it is less
prone to suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Gary, I have been having the same problem since May. I have unchecked and
rechecked and unchecked again the SSL in windows mail. I finaly got the
error messages to stop but it still won't connect. When I saw this I turned
off my email scanning & restarted but it still didn't work. I have Norton
and figure that's most likely the problem. Do you know how I can fix this?

You're welcome, Karen.
Yes, we've had many users report here with your identical issue.
Here is an explanation of why antivirus email scanning is bad:

Thanks, Gary! I run Webroot Anti-Virus & Spysweeper, also Webroot Firewall. I
have just turned off the 'check e-mail attachment' option of Webroot
Antivirus, restarted my computer. Now I am ok in Windows Mail!
But, there has been no problem in the past with the email option turned
on--that baffles me. Nevertheless, for now everything is working and I do
appreciate your response!
Oh, and have there been known problems with Webroot applications?

That type of error is often caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off.

Can anyone help me fix whatever is causing the error described above? I use
IE&, Windows Vista home premium.
Thanks for any help!
