Well, I'm glad I jogged your memory when I mentioned trying the
webmail login credentials.

If uninstalling McAfee, and using their cleanup tool, did not cure the
problem, then something else is causing it.
Are you able to get a more comprehensive error message if you
click on Cancel after trying the password a few times? If so,
please post a copy of that error message.
Are you certain you are using the correct username and password?
Do the same username and password work when you access that
email account with webmail (using your browser)?
Other than that, I am fresh out of ideas.

I don't know which is best, but the two free ones that are compatible
with Windows Mail are:
AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
With either of those, during the install phase you must select custom
install, and then deselect the email scanning module so it won't install.
Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of aggressive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview
Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in McAfee.

McAfee is your problem. It is one of the top three troublemakers for
Windows Mail. Uninstall McAfee completely, then follow up with their
debris removal tool:

If that improves the situation, we can recommend a compatible
free antivirus program.
What is a compatible anti virus program, I want to use the best!

There is a strong possibility that your antivirus has corrupted that mail
account. As a first step, try this: delete that mail account, restart
Windows Mail, then recreate the account. Does it work now?
Which antivirus are you running?

I have the same problem and even when I uninstall and redo the process it keeps doing it with windows live and windows
mail.
I
run mcafee. I had a virus so I wiped out everything and reinstalled my windows vista??? Is this the problem??

I have exactly the same problem - for no apparent reason a pop-up with
Windows Security writ large asks me to verify my user name and password. when
I do (they haven't changed in 6 months) it wont let me access my email
server. As we live in a remote part of the world and this is our only form of
communication this is really serious
So I do have live mail and windows mail with the same problem to both. I uninstalled mcafee and used your removal tool. At
this time I tried my email while I was unprotected and it did not help my situation, so I reinstalled mcafee again. If it was
mcafee causing the problem would it have worked when it was totally uninstalled. I had even reinstalled live with a new
account at that time still no luck.
Okay now I feel really silly, when I set up my account in my mail I put in a password and user name that is different than what was in my webmail user and password..now everything works..
