I don't know why Avast seems to be causing a slowdown.
Try uninstalling it. Does that improve the situation? If yes,
try the free AVG antivirus:

With either AVG or Avast, during the install phase you must select 'custom' install, and then deselect the email scanning module so
it won't be installed.

hi, sorry its me again. My query is not specific to this thread by specific to some advice I followed. I downloaded avast to find that internet explorer and flash player slowed considerably to the extent that connections from chatrooms et al were terminated. Is this a problem with avast or a incompatability with Vista? Do I need to adjust any avast settings that you are aware of or should I look for an alternative antivirus (the threads on the avast site are far to complicated for a layman like me..). Everything else (including email) seems ok.
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks

Not to worry, Windows Mail does not delete any folders or email when
deleting an account. (Windows Live Mail does, a stupid design flaw.)
Messages that are pending delivery will patiently wait for you.
