If you can boot an XP installation CD and cannot boot from a Vista installation DVD then I suspect that the problem may be with DVD head in the combo CD/DVD drive.

Thanks for all the advice. I have run chkdsk again and on bootup it
said that chkdsk could not be run because the system volume if RAW. It
seems my hard drive has somehow changed from ntfs to raw without me
knowing!! I have done a bit of research and it does not look like a
simple thing to repair so I think I will reinstall a clean version of
xp doing a complete format of the drive at the same time. then i will
try to upgrade vista over the top of this. Unless anyone has a simpler
way of repairing my hard drive........?
Thanks again
Matt
I have tried it in another PC and it boots from the DVD. I have also
tried removing all surplus hardware, trying another HDD, remove some
RAM, but still all i get when I try to boot from the DVD is a blank
screen with a flashing underscore!! I have also been able to boot from
my old xp disk so there is no problem with the DVD drive. The only thing
I have not been able to test is the motherboard so I'm guessing this is
where my problem lies!! Any ideas....?
