It sounds like you have pretty much demonstrated that your motherboard and or RAM never worked properly.
Too high a percentage of brand new RAM, even from name brand vendors, is defective out of the box. Skipping quality control is one way to keep prices low.
And alas the same is true for mobos.
Sadly, many mobos just will not work with all four ram slots filled, although that is less of a problem with newer designs.
There are also some strange voltage incompatibilities between some AMD processors and mobos (personally experienced with ASUS). If you can enter the BIOS you may want to ensure that voltage and other settings are correct.
In your situation I would suspect a bad mobo from day one.
If you are going to upgrade and want to stay with AMD I have been very impressed with the Phenom II. However technically the low end Intel Quads are slightly better performers at similar prices. Basic Intel mobos tend to be the most reliable even if they lack overclocking features you will never use.
