Internet Explorer certificate messages

I access servers internally which are SSL but not signed by a trusted CA, therefore ever since Explorer 7 I have extra clicks to undertake before access is finally provided.

I believe I either add the certificate in IE of my non-trusted CA.

OR

Disable IE from going through these vigorous checks.

Does anyone have good notes on both these methods ?

I've tried to import the certificate and have never had any success, but i don't really understand the formats and all the various tabs.
