Mike,
Oh, but yesterday I did do a system restore (went back to 6001 / SP1)
Last night I reinstalled SP2, rebooted 3 or 4 times to make certain the error no longer persisted...
.... Today I was presented with the same 0xC004E003 error (again on SP2)
the error no longer persisted, but then after a system freeze (which reset my bios / cmos) ... upon booting back into windows (with the SP2)
so... I'm thinking it's an WGA glitch in the new service pack.
I will do system restore to go back to the point immediately before the SP2 install, and then will try regenerating the licence information, and will attempt to activate / validate again.
Good point though, will try system restore now & go back to 6001 / SP1.
Regards / thanks,
Sarah White

Had vista on this computer since the summer... a few months ago, I ordered a "windows anytime upgrade" to upgrade my home basic to ultimate... great...
Well, this weekend I installed KB948465 (vista, SP2 beta 32bit) ...
OOPS!!!
Windows Vista (TM)
Evaluation copy. Build 6002
This copy of Windows is not genuine
That is to say, every time I log in since the weekend:
1) A pop-up asks me to validate windows
2) The online validation doesn't work...
3) Phone validation didn't work (they told me to contact tech support)
4) Microsoft tried to transfer me to tech support on the weekend when they were closed (oops lol)
... called back on a "business day" ...
5) Yesterday (Monday, December 15th 2008) they gave me a NEW KEY!? HUH?
So... I spent 2 hours on the phone (cellphone, daytime minutes) on the phone with Microsoft yesterday...
Over 2 hours wasted (nearly 2 and a half) and they did a few steps that didn't seem to fix the problem (everything from having me do a system restore to pre-SP2 beta, to even deleting / regenerating my license data)
Well, This morning, less than 24 hours after the issue was "resolved"
... Ultimately, my cmos / bios battery (on the motherboard) flaked out
I am now back to error 0xC004E003, and short of a new product key
(or another 2 hours on the phone)
... I dunno... meh.
These are the steps the Microsoft employee used remotely:
--- From elevated command prompt: ---
~> net stop slsvc (also stops ready boost, etc. so we picked "yes")
~> cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService
~> cd AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
~> dir
~> rename tokens.dat tokens.ba1
~> cd %windir%\system32
~> net start slsvc
~> cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc
--- end ---
We tried my CD key again (from the windows anytime upgrade)
(no luck)
Ultimately, had to use a brand new key
(which they provided / told me to write down)
... As I said, back to square 1 now, and windows is again saying:
Windows Vista (TM)
Evaluation copy. Build 6002
This copy of Windows is not genuine
I have tried to delete the license data as the MS tech person did...
That didn't fix it.

Sarah White

P.S. I had the CPU over-clocked a tad (less than 30%) was working great for months, but then got a system freeze this morning (the bios / cmos reset itself at that point so I lowered the frequency slightly) ... I forgot to change the date back to a reasonable date (someone on another forum / site / newsgroup mentioned that CMOS battery / bios date reset can cause validation issues, so note sure)
You say that you did "... everything from having me do a system
restore to pre-SP2 beta ..."
You evidently did not do a system restore as the system data is still reporting a SP2 kernel version.
Can you do a bare metal restore - which it sounds like they told you to do, but it looks like you did not do
(as an aside you knew that this pre-beta SP2 could render your entire system unstable and you did prepare for this by making a full system backup that you could use to do a bare metal restore ?).
Also note that for SP2 support you need to use the right forum = this is clearly stated in the KB article 948465
