Re: XP to Vista 64 conversion

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi Wade,

The Easy Trasfer Tool has to be run from within a working XP installation, and then from the Vista install. It can't be used to grab files from the failed system in the manner you are trying to use it. For what you are trying to do, all you need to do is copy/move the files from the old drive to the new. You wouldn't "convert" anything, you probably just need to access the files.

Currently they are "owned" by the user account you had in XP. To change permissions, right click the destination folder and select properties. On the security tab click advanced, then go to the ownership tab. Click edit, then change to your account. Enable the line to propagate to all subcontainers and folders, then apply/ok. It should take some time to run through, exit when complete. You should then be able to access the files.

Hello

My XP motherboard crashed. I bought a new computer preloaded with Vista
64 and installed my old hard drive in my new computer. I have all my old
files on the extra HD but Easy transfer will not give converting those files
as an option. How do I convert the files from one HD(XP) to the other(Vista)?

Thank you
