Thank you so much for following this.
First, let me give you the driver info that I recently downloaded from
Compaq website. And the version reads the same when looking it up in Control
Settings.

I have not approached the fonts and DPI idea. But the driver update may
have helped, because the PC seems to be holding the resolution after a few
startups so far. Pretty good.
So, hopefully I'm done. for now...

Yup, resolution too tiny.
What does that mean-- not compliant with new PC and Vista and new
graphics?

Thank you for clarifying questions.
1) For Monitor info it says that "connector type" is VGA.
2) Monitor is Gateway VX720. The same Report gives serial # GWY02D0 .

Generic is not the monitor name. generic just means that your
graphics
card
has no idea what make or model your monitor really is.

On 3/16/07 a thread started, "Resolution Reset on Startup"
about
screen
resolution not holding the setting. Has to be re-set constantly.
I did the 2 recommendations given, one on 5/19/08 and another on
5/29/08.
1st fix= using WinRE and running StartUp Repair and rebooting
and
resetting
graphics and rebooting. DIDN'T HELP.
2nd fix= To uncheck an option, "Base Video", in the StartUp
Menu
under
"misconfig". This option was already unchecked when I looked.
I have also had the resolution problem regardless of Vista SP1
loaded
or
not. (because I've had to run a full "System Recovery" recently.
That
gave
opportunity to see if that was a cause.)
Anyone have more ideas on this problem? Like all other
problems,
it
is
annoying.
