A year and a half and they still can't patch it.

So what are you doing with IE8 when you have that INFERIOR Ubuntu to
hang your hat on? Don't worry about Microsoft. Worry about that piece
of crap Ubuntu that you have a HARD-ON for.
I think you missed the point, Billdo. MS has known about a serious
security flaw in IE6 & 7 for a year and a half and has failed to patch
it. They waited so long to fix it that it's now been actively
exploited - and they waited a month after that to even announce it.
Why? Do they lack funding? No, there are still billions in the bank.
Is the flaw unimportant? No, MS actually has pointed out how severe
and dangerous it is.
Why then? There's only one explanation - they don't really care about
their customer's security.
Being that you have no idea what the flaw is, you are just guessing.
If you have IE8 (which is available), no worries.
If you have Vista (which is the OS the NG pertains to), no worries.
Much ado 'bout nothing.
