Yeah, I know, "mad" as in "out-of-his-gourd" for sure.

Side note: If one does decide to try Ubuntu, get the "LTS" (Long Term Support which is 8.04 right now), because the 6mo release intervals is "bleeding edge" and can/will cause you trouble. ..Despite what some here may tell you about recent releases, don't do it unless you like "living-on-the edge." Always go for "Tried-and-true." You will be much happier.

I've been running 9.04 since it came out without any problems. In fact, some of the bugs of the 8.04 and 8.10 have been ironed out and it's the best version so far. I do NOT, however, recommend using ext4 until Karmic Koala comes out as many programs haven't upgraded for ext4 yet.

Well, I haven't delved much into the latest release mostly for time constraints, but I have read about plenty of problems with it. ..Lost sound, lost this or that function. I'm about to update my Netbook to 9.04 and check it out. It's not a bad idea to wait a month or two before upgrading, to allow time for bug fixes however. I have DL'd the 9.04 ISO and checked it out, but it still doesn't recognize my built in wireless. I resorted to buying a Belkin USB wireless which works great in 8.10 Ubuntu Ultimate. (On my Netbook Acer Aspire) ..But, I feel that especially on a Netbook, everything should "just work." Yes, yes, I know, it isn't Lunux's fault the dumb A** chip mfgs don't supply the proper drivers. I DL'd the Ubuntu "Netbook remix" but haven't had time to see if they solved some issues. I hope so..

As far as Ext4 goes, well, until it's proven "tried-and-true" I'll not be using it. I used to be up for new -n- exciting stuff, but I'm older and less patient these days. I just want my main OS's to work. Sure, I did the Win7 Beta testing and now RC, but that is more like hobby stuff. I can always return to my stable OS's after testing others. That's why I choose to NOT allow anything but LTS updates to be installed on my main Linux computer. I used to allow the 6mo intervals, but got weary of fixing problems. I just don't have the time/patience for it anymore.

In the end, I still recommend tried-and-true for ANY OS above bleeding edge. PARTICULARLY when it comes to GENERAL users. (NO disrespect intended.) The next LTS isn't that far away anyway, and by then most if not all the bugs will be ironed out, better and exciting stuff included, and a new user will have a great experience, just like they will with an LTS version now. I am writing this from experience, not just opinion. It makes NO difference that YOUR upgrade to 9.04 installation "Just works." Too many others right now are having problems, which is reasonably expected with non LTS releases.

G'day

The only thing I had to tweak was to get Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to work again. A simple Ubuntu help web site search gave me the commands and it was very simple. Also, Amarok 2.0 sucks but Exaile is a better alternative to Amarok. The fact that the MB's speaker sounds off when I shut down bothered me until I learned that that is the case with everyone. Note that I have upgraded (no clean installs) from 6.10 all the way to 9.04 with each version, IMHO, being better than the previous one. That said, I don't do wireless so I obviously don't have a problem with that.

Yeah, easy enough for you or me, but we are talking about the GENERAL user here. Again no disrespect, but clueless users is what I am talking about. They need Tried-and-true. That simple. Wireless, well, I think Linux has a ways to go. Again, not the OS'S fault as the chip makers need a swift kick in the a** to get them motivated. I read over and over again about wireless problems, having to use NDIS wrapper etc. Clueless people just don't have the skills to be doing such things, so need it to just work. It's coming, but slowly. The fact that you had to do anything at all to get your 6mo upgrade to work properly, says it all. I'm validated in what I'm saying. Hehe, not that Windows is all that different with having problems either!

9.04 does start up faster and shutdown faster like Shuttelworth demanded, but other issues still exist. I'm not in any way dissing the OS, just advising caution about jumping into something new that may not be ready for "prime-time," is all.

G'day

I install Ubuntu for "clueless users" all the time but I don't just install the OS, I install the programs they want and I show them how to use Ubuntu.

First, sorry for response delay(s), I'm a busy person and only do this bit when I have time which isn't normally all that often.

I do the same as you as far as installing an alternative OS for those who wish it, and do training. HOWEVER, "clueless" people are downloading Linux flavors and are having trouble adjusting. That in it's self isn't totally Linux's fault, BUT I have clients that can't even create a folder, much less figure out how to put stuff in it, and you know there are MANY other clueless people out there. So, having to figure out that they need NDIS Wrapper, for example, to install a Windows written driver for wireless in order to get their wireless working at all, is expecting quite a lot from general users who don't have the $$'s or just don't want to PAY someone to get it all working.

Same with MS Windows, had a general user installed Win7 RC and the correct drivers for video and sound didn't get installed as was the case with my install, they would be stumped as to what to do. LOL, there is NO good reason I had to fiddle with drivers at all considering the age of this main computer. Vista got it right, so why Win7 didn't I don't know or really care for that matter. It should have just worked with not so old, well known and popular hardware, period. Sadly, even in this day-and-age, it isn't so.

Anyway, I still maintain that a general user is better off using tried-and-true versions of any OS. And really, you know I'm right. You say that you install for the clueless all the time. Well good for them, it's the ones who want to do it themselves, that are left to their own demise, as they have NO clue what to do when problems arise, and as silly as it may seem, many of them can't seem to get Google to work for finding answers! LOL (Now that really IS clueless)

You seem to get on the defensive for no good reason when Linux problems are revealed. (Along with the rest of the Linux zealots, LOL) While Linux works great for me, and many others capable of dealing with the little problems, there are MANY others incapable of figuring/fixing problems. Just the nature of the beast is all. Whitewashing serves no good purpose whether it be Linux, Windows, or any other OS. Right now I have Ubuntu bitching that it can't connect to certain update servers, but I haven't had the time to deal with it. That alone causes me to call BS on the "it just works" mantra just as it does with Windows. NONE of them "just works," period. I have no confidence they ever will.

G'day

How you can hold me responsible for what people I don't know do is beyond me. If someone clicks on an email attachment in Windows with the subject, See Angeline Jolene suck cock, they will be sorry regardless of what *box* they came out of and you can't really blame the person or company that installed Windows. That said, once a user has been taught the basics and has his or her Ubuntu set up properly, maintenance and updates are a piece of cake compared to Windows. We give post install support for free because we get called so infrequently except by happy clients who have a friend or colleague that wants us to install Ubuntu for them too.
