But won't for most users which is what I think Gordon was eluding to.
Most users of what? Quicken, MS Money, 3D garden or house planners, album based clipart collections, games, greeting card stuff, language tutors, musical instrument tutors.. you know the stuff.. what you generally see on sale in computer stores.
I have no doubt that eventually they will be reworked, but for now, it is not an easy or equal transition.
This would be your opinion. Of course the same could be said for Office 2007. Many home users I assist find it much more comfortable to go to OOo3 instead of Office 2007 for reasons of both price and the toolbar interface. It is less of a transition for them to learn how to use the OOo3 toolbars than it is to have to deal with the MS ribbon.
Where once one could only claim 'too expensive' for MS Office, now the ribbon learning curve can be pinned on it too, and I agree that it takes some getting used to.. but software goes way further than just Office or a bunch of Windows only utilities.. >>
Wal-Mart took up the cause of selling Linux boxes. It is difficult enough to get English out of some Wal-Mart employees, let alone any decent Linux support. There is no money to be made in supporting a free Linux Distro, no incentive, and until the home user is well catered re software that looks and feels and works like Windows software, free Linux distros have a problem.
Wouldn't you go to the OEM of the computers with Linux on them from Walmart instead of the retailer for support? If you buy an HP or Dell machine (windows or linux) from Walmart, you don't go to Walmart for support!
We are talking customers of Wal-Mart, yes?
The way to get support from software authors does not include badgering people in a Vista newsgroup. Alias would do better to use his business acumen, assuming he is as capable as he suggests, to build a business case and present it to the software houses..
Windows unfortunately is a necessary evil still.
Yes, along with subsonic flight and the internal combustion engine.. some things will not go away because they work.
The most advanced Linux distros and support services are those used in paying environments. Return is what drives people and companies to do things, and free doesn't return anything excpet that the user gets it free. Unfortunately, there is no free ride.
An operating system without the support of software houses is worth nothing. If Windows had been given away free, and users expected supporting software to be free as well, I doubt that we would have seen the revolution in computers as it has been. Windows was just the carrier for the imaginations of those clever enough to produce all of the 3rd party stuff, but cash return was the biggest driving force. MS is not the only company to do well. There are a few small companies and individuals who have made tidy fortunes on the back of MS..
Users would rather pirate Windows than revert to an OS for which there is not too much happening.. :-)
