Moreover, the effects themselves are the product of many months of research and usability studies about how users interact with GUIs in a production environment...."
LOL! Yet another SLANTED OPINION lacking ALL the FACTS. Yes, Compiz does have "eye candy" effects as does Vista, but it also has some very good productive features, "Plug-ins," that does enhance productivity which the author completely omits. ..More so than Vista actually. I happen to like "eye-candy" as do many others, whether it be my Vista Ultimate or Linux with Compiz. So what? It's totally MY preference as it should be. AND how laughable is the statement, "Of course, like most attempts by the Linux community to parrot Windows Vista," really, get a grip! Not even close. If anything, Microsoft has parroted, as usual, Apple AND Linux.
To name just a couple productivity enhancements in Linux with Compiz, try Scale, Desktop Zoom, and virtual desktops, to name a few which totally rock. How does someone accuse Linux with Compiz of "parroting" Vista with those, (and other), enhancements? LOL, you can't, as Vista doesn't have them, and most likely will never have them. (Unless they COPY them. LOL)
The ONLY "parroting" SOME Linux distributions may do is to look and feel SIMILAR to Windows in order to give new Linux users familiarity so they can get used to change. That's it, no underlying reasons at all.
I will say that many of the YouTube videos showing off Compiz, center on the "eye candy" rather than the productivity, which is silly. If one wants to make a point, one should display the most useful reasons for switching.
Of course this falls on deaf ears, and thus nasty comments, bluster, and most foul comments will follow. Yeah, like I care, I do what I want, you do what YOU want, but STFU.

When Windows machines at work got "Broken" and the OEM CDs were lost I simply replaced the OS with Debian or Ubuntu and the users were up and running again. Usual cause of failure was spyware / crapware infestations and people simply turning them off out of sheer frustration. None of the machines were really worth "Buying" a new copy of XP for.
Learning curve for the users was negligible.
And that is my point... MS can produce quality products, but it's no longer a one horse race. People look at cost more and shop around more.
Like most industries there has to be a "Top Dog" with the funding to innovate. Not all innovations work or generate income, so a company like MS is a good thing but needs to stay motivated, and competition is the best motivator.
Another problem is security. An employee given a machine that "Looks Like" what he / she has at home is going to want to install many of the little utilities they use at home. When payroll was done on a dumb terminal attached to a mainframe there was little risk of it being compromised. Now, a virus can probably get at that data easily. WTF are we thinking running stuff like that on an office PC? Yes, things can be locked down, but how many really are?
