Didn't know that. My hard drive was going, going,.......If it booted
far enough (several times it didn't), I got the message "Back up your
folders and files immediately; your hard drive is failing" - or words
to that effect. I decided not to invest in another hard drive since
the computer (an HP, by the way - I've had three of them) was 5 years
old. Who knows what goes next?
Fair enough.....just thought I'd ask.
Typically, mechanical compononents are the ones that fail the most. HD's,
fans, and CD drives (well, floppies too, but using a floppy has become
uncommon with Gig size USB thumb drives for $15).
It may be worth it to invest $40 in a HD and use the machine as a second
machine, for whatever......(since you're already planning to spend
hundreds on a new system anyway, what's $40 ?)

Why, oh why, did my other computer have to crash? I don't need
this.
You never did mention this in your other post.
Define crash.
The term 'crash' is most often used for a s/w malfunction of some
type.....almost all of which can be resolved w/o having to buy a new
computer.
Many 'crashes' are a result of bad RAM, or faulty power supply,
either of which is *significantly* less expensive than buying a new
system.
