Vista 64 freezing when I plug in USB drives after resuming from Hibernation

Hello,
I am having this problem with Vista 64 bits and an HP dv5t laptop that came with the OS pre installed.
When I plug in USB devices such as USB thumb drives, or even USB external hard drives (which have their own energy source) the computer completely freezes. I have noticed this always when the computer has resumed from hibernation. I can plug in the devices after a fresh boot and they do not cause any problem.
Also, if I plug in the devices BEFORE resuming form hibernation (when the laptop is completely turned off) and then resume, the devices work OK and the system often does not freeze. Sometimes it freezes when it's 99% in the process of resuming. However, in those instances, I simply force a shutdown with the power button, then power on the laptop, Vista tells me that a previous resumption attempt failed, I instruct it to reattempt and the laptop resumes without freezing.
I have run Windows Update and the laptop is up to date. The HP health monitor also is run frequently and does not find any updated drivers. Has anyone else experienced this?
Thanks in advance
P.S. There is no event logged about this and there is no problem reported related to this by Windows' "Problem Reports and Solutions"
.
