I just downloaded an .exe file fromt the internet and saved it to mythat
harddrive. But I must've done something wrong in the process because
when I check the location I saved it to, it shows a shortcut (.lnk)
won't do a thing if I double click on it.noticed
Is there a way to change the extension back to .exe so I can run it
(it's an install program)? I've already scouted the forums and
you can do something with your regs, but I'm afraid that will affect
other files on my computer and I'm only having problems with this
particular file.
Thanks in advance!
You don't say what the executable file is supposed to be, but if it
is a
large file OR the site wants you to download an even bigger file,
then
having a link would be correct.
To change the extension from LNK to EXE you can click the file once
(to
highlight it) and then click once again about a second later. This
will
highlight the name itself. Once that is done you can change the file
name/extension to anything you wish. Just be aware that if this is
spyware or something horrid like that you could be endangering your
computer.
Have you scanned the lnk/exe file with your antivirus yet?

I've already tried renaming the file to "something.exe", but that
didn't solve my problem.
I'm fairly sure it is supposed to be an .exe file, since that's what it
states on the download page. Also, it's aprox. 1 GB in size. It's a free
game downloaded from the developer's website, so I'm also sure it isn't
malicious software, but thanks for the heads up.
For some additional info, I believe I did something wrong when I chose
'save as'. When I downloaded the file and wanted to specify the folder
to save it to, I believe I must've clicked on a shortcut on my desktop
(in the 'save as' window), before I continued to specify the desired
location on my harddrive. I believe that somehow I changed the file name
and the extension that way...
