Hi Susan,

There's no way to force an uninstall, brute or otherwise, of Windows
Defender as it's integrated into the operating system. As long as it's not
running, it cannot interfere with any other anti-malware products you choose
to run. Microsoft is not and will not be working on any method of doing
this, as it's part of the security mechanisms used to protect both the user
and the operating system. Windows 7 is treating it exactly the same way, and
to my knowledge there is no movement to change this (and actually, at this
point in the dev cycle it would be too late anyways, design changes are
implemented before it goes to beta releases, not after).

The exception to the above is when WD was installed optionally to an XP
installation that was later upgraded to Vista. And the uninstall routine is
a bit sloppy, leaving bits and pieces everywhere, and you cannot later
reinstall it.

Thank you Rick--interesting. On another forum to my same question
someone suggested...

"If you still have that wish, try this from the command line:

msiexec /uninstall windowsdefender.msi /quiet /log uninstall.log

I can't give you any guarantee though; I'm not on Vista, remember?
Some people report it works. Of course, you should execute that
command with admin rights."

I'm actually coming around to turning WD back on and use it so right
now there is little danger I will attempt this--but I'm curious if you
are aware of it and likely its problems?

Is it true that Vista 64-bit has no viruses to date?

Thank you.
