hi ,my sons acer laptop seems to have developed a fault, when he powers up
after a short sime it just shuts down .sometimes it will load the os
(vista
hp)and sometimes it wont even get to the boot screen .i have noticed that
the
fan is not working ,

As the machine is under warranty, get it fixed. It's got physical
problems.

If the fan's not working and the system shuts down and doesn't restart, the
shutdown is often due to heat damaging components, and that can't be easily
fixed. The problem will get worse, and it shouldn't be your problem.

So, this in reality probably means that the laptop will be *replaced*, so be
sure that you BACK UP all the data first.

Again: don't think for a minute that the service guys will respect your
data. They will take the fastest route, which includes replacement or
resetting to factory settings - no user data.

Back up the data first, be sure to get the mail and addresses too. This
should be your first priority. Then make the calls.

i think this may be the problem so i need some
clarification so i can narrow down the possible causes ,the laptop is
still
under warranty but if a virus is the cause then i can attempt to recover
from
the partition .on the rare occasion it tries to load the bios i get asked
for
a password which i know has never been set by me could the manufacturer
have
set this to protect the bios settings?

No, it likely means that the unit was handled by someone else who put the PW
on. For the manufacturer, doing this means a guaranteed support call, which
means their cost rises. It may need a call to the manufacturer to reset
it, but as it needs service (probably replacement), this is pointless.

A trick for resetting some of these things is to shut down, unplug the
power supply, remove the battery, unplug any USB devices, then press and
hold the power switch for about one minute. Now put the battery back, plug
in, turn it on, etc. This will reset the CMOS settings, and may - or may
not - clear the BIOS password. If it doesn't, you have to call the
manufacturer. For some systems, you have to send it to a service center to
clear this.

Was it a store demo? That is the kind of thing a store would do to prevent
passers-by from disabling it. Altenately, a user might have gotten
confused as to exactly where to enter a password.

any advise will be greatley appreciated
