There seem to be a number of incompatibility issues with existing 32-bit
software and peripherals.

I absolutely would recommend it, for NEW computers that can run it. Take a look at the machines for sale in Sam's or Best Buy. Nearly all of them are shipping with 64 bit Vista and 4 or 6 GB of RAM standard.

64 bit is quickly becoming the standard. A couple more years like this and 64 bit will be the majority.

Buying a machine with 32 bit Vista today is as dumb as buying a machine in 1996 with Windows 3.11 installed.

99% of 32 bit apps run fine in 64 bit. The only compatibility issues would be with drivers. But if there is a Vista 32 bit driver for a given piece of hardware, then there is a Vista 64 bit driver also. The driver situation has improved dramatically in the last year. Now that Vista has a substantial market share (over 20%), it is no longer being ignored.
