Re: trim the fat

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hey Keepout--

Black Viper is an excellent guide to services you can turn off. That's one aspect and only one of speeding your pc. Another similar one is to put up Task Man and end processes you don't need running at the time. Also go to msconfig by typing that into the run box and on Startup you can end all the services you don't need starting. For example MSN messenger doesn't need to open at start unless you're someone who lives on MSN messenger. If you just use it once in a while, why have it running gobbling CPU as a process--i.e. don't let it run on start.

Many services start default for XP, Vista, and Win 7 and they correspond to hdw you don't even have and probably never will have.

If you're not using a tablet pc for example, then running a tablet process is not much help. I also notice that some processes like Win Mail, Outlook, and particularly Adobe reader run to read .pdfs tend to persist until you go to Task Man>right clcik and manually end the process.

I've made a guide on this MSN Space on ways to speed up XP and it applies to Vista as well.

It's not just processes btw, but a number of other components or reasons exist why your PC will slow down. For example defragging with a competent defragger like Raxco's Perfect Disk or Executive Soft's Diskeepr can make a big impact in speed. Depending on how often you use your box, and how many installs you do, you should defrag regularly.

Also if you look on web archive sites you can download DX Hog Hunt and it will display all folders and files and tell you the size they take.

Size matters with respect to slowing down a Windows box. If you have a lot of files taking up space, and some folderws can hit the GB range after a while, they will definitely slow you down.

Make it a point not only to empty Temp Internet Files from Tools>Options> but type %temp% into either the IE browsewindow or the run box and hit ctrl+A to highlight them all>then shift+delete which will get rid of all but a couple of those files. The last time I deleted mine I knocked off 2 gb of space hogs I didn't need but the big size was probably due to aone or two big temp files.

Here's my guide for speeding your PC written during XP but it applies to Vista as well by and large.

with 2 gigs ram, and 2.8 ghz dual Pentium D, on Vista HP, it's starting to run
like a slug. I need to trim the fat, disable or turn to manual those services
that are now just taking up overhead, and the system could run better without
them.

Is there a list of absolutely necessary services, and what their settings
should be ?
