I guess I should append that to state it is allowed under the command line, but not from the gui. Been that way for a long time. The gui inteprets it as an attempt to create a file, not a folder.

No can do.
All it says is "You must enter a file name".
It's because you haven't yet. A "." indicates the beginning of a file extension, and thus some name must preceed the ".".
This is killing me; I'm losing all weekend I need to be working.
Then stop trying to do what you're doing and get back to work. There's no workaround or trick, you cannot begin the name with a "." - period.
