Re: 'Windows Explorer is Not Responding' - Help!

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

zachd, Thanks for taking the time to respond.
The thrust of my original message was that it's disapointing that such a
problem should exist. Focusing on how diagnostics take place is not the
issue.

And 'no' I'm not covered by NDA - I suppose MSFTs are.
Thanks to Art, switching to FireFox has got rid of my 'Not Responding'
problem.
Too bad I have to use IE to get here.

I totally agree with what you're saying re diagnostics, etc. Point I'm
making
is that I seen lots of messages about this problem and they all take that
path (and rightly so) but I'm yet to see a positive outcome.

Search on deja.com for me asking for 'fault information' - probably a query
like 'zachd@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx fault information' and look for
ones where I get response information (probably you can add the keyword
'offset' to find those) and check the response.

The instances of good full data posted are extremely rare, but there's been
a variety of positive outcomes when that data (or the DMP file) is made
available. This stuff isn't rocket science, but it *is* science and without
the technical data I always point out as Critical nobody is going to get
very far. Look for ... hmm... cmdlineext.dll (IIRC) for a few, for example.

Having seen this pattern of no outcome 'everywhere' it's disapointing that
the problem is not being given greater attention by MS.

I have no idea how you're measuring "attention" but strongly suspect that
you're not covered by NDA and thus not privy to the attention given to this
set of problems. As a user, you need to be using actual support channels-
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#psssupport

If your metric is that these unsupported newsgroups-
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#netiquette
aren't getting personal crash attention, yeah, this isn't really a viable
support venue. The Rules of Conduct for this newsgroup I believe point out
that it's not intended to be such. =\

BTW, when we (those with the problem) see 'Not Responding' we're not
talking
seconds but multiple minutes for a response - then all the clicks happen
at
once. For me it can happen against almost any program - Internet Explorer,
Windows Explorer, Outlook, non-MS programs, .... the lot.

A "Windows Explorer is not responding" *crash* would be different than your
computer locking up briefly. Terminology is key. =\

If you ask me I'd say there's a lock somewhere that's timing out. Questin
is, what's setting it and why? I suspect it's at the GUI level - cpu is
not
being hit, and Task manager shows normal background paging activity.

Sounds likely, and sounds unlikely that someone without box access can debug
a transient condition via text. Actual support or serious debugging would
likely be needed, I'd think. Process Explorer *might* lead you in the right
direction, but transient hangs - those are kind of an absolute nightmare to
debug remotely without an actual remote to the system. If you're a dev, you
probably already know that, though. =)
