What type of everything are you attaching to the computer? You're specifically referring to the imaging acquisition dialog: I take it you're referring to scanning and photography devices?

You can set the default actions for events in the "Scanners and Cameras" control panel under the Properties for the device, in the Events tab.

In XP, I was always asked by the operating system (with any new hardware
action that I specified) whether I wanted that to be the default action to
use whenever this same action was sensed in the future. I cannot see any way
in Vista to set this, and Vista is not offering me the easy option that XP
did.
