you should not do anything regarding the wireless network card.

Ignore it completely.

The virtual machine is just like a PHYSICAL machine, and it will have access to the local network and/or internet from whatever network card you have .. it doesn’t care if it’s a
wired card a network card or anything....

I just install vmware, then install the client, and then put in the clients network settings whatever I would change if it was a physical machine.

I don’t fiddle with any networks nor change anything on the host...

but as I said make sure the ethernet settings on the vmware client is set to BRIDGE...

If something else is not working perhaps try disabling a firewall or something..

I never had a problem and I have been using vmware desktop, server and player for years long before it was widely known...

Do you know how to configure a computer with a static IP so it will work with your router?

What OS is the client in vmware?

Thanks for the response…I gave the VM’s nic a static address when I mapped
the VM’s nic to the wireless nic as stated in the original post. I could
then ping the Vista’s nic, but could not ping the router's gateway address or
anything outside the Vista host.

you do not need to bridge anything!

In the virtual machine settings of your particular virtual machine set the
ethernet to be bridged!

I personally go inside the virtual machine then and give it a static IP
address, as well as gateway and dns server of my routers IP address
(which in my case is 192.168.1.1.)
