Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi Andy,

I apologize if I threw a spanner into the works. DNS version 10 is
not a revolutionary new product, it's just the periodic upgrade to DNS
they do every 18 to 24 months. There wouldn't be any more difficulty in
learning or using DNS with version 10 as compared to version 9. The
commands have been basically the same with every version since I started
using it 10 years ago with version 3.5. The difference is each upgrade
version has been a little bit more accurate and works a little bit
faster than the previous version. It's funny but yesterday afternoon I
received a call from the Nuance sales department, urging me to upgrade
to version 10. I talked to the rep for about 5 minutes and told him my
feelings that I usually don't buy the new version when it comes out
because I like to wait for them to sort out any bugs that have cropped
up. Well the guy assured me that this version is bug free and is 25%
more accurate than version 9.5. Then I made a little survey on the
three forums that I monitor and find the general consensus is that
version 10 is ready for prime time, almost everybody is happy with it.
Also you can see Lunis is recommending it over version 9. Well
naturally, he makes more money on it.

However I didn't know he was selling DNS Preferred version 10 for
$150 until I scanned all the way down to the bottom of his pricelist and
read the fine print. I figure that's a pretty good deal because if you
buy version 9.5 now for $99, you will probably upgrade to version 10
later; the upgrade price on that will be $99 also. So you will have
spent $198 by the time you get version 10. If you take the deal Lunis
is offering now you can get version 10 for $150 and save yourself $48.
I think his special price expires on September 30 but you should check
with Lunis.

Also, if Nuance puts out any updates for version 10 they will be free
downloads as they always are. There were two updates on version 9, the
first was 9.1, and the next was 9.5. 9.1 was to clear up a couple bugs,
9.5 was to make it compatible with Vista. Actually 9.5 was not a
partial update but it was a complete version with a new CD which you
could either download for free or order it from Nuance for $10 shipping
charge, which I did. Of course you have to be a licensed user to
install it. During the installation process you activate it over the
Internet with your license code.

You are allowed 10 installations with each license. The end-user
license agreement (known as the EULA) says that they must be on your own
computer(s) and only one person can use the software at a time. If you
decide to move the software to another computer you are allowed to
uninstall it on the previous computer and you get credit back for one
installation. In other words you never use up your 10 installations if
you uninstall properly before reinstalling on another computer. I think
it's a pretty liberal policy.

With regard to the KnowBrainer program, it will work exactly the same
with version 10 as with version 9. The purpose of KnowBrainer is to
make possible totally hands-free operation of your computer. That
includes operating the programs within Windows, such as Microsoft Office
and all its parts. Lunis runs his entire business totally hands-free.
When he receives an order he enters it verbally, and the invoice and
shipping documents are automatically printed. Also his inventory
controls are handled by KnowBrainer. Of course you're not running a
business so you don't need this capability but it just gives an example
of what you can do with KnowBrainer and DNS.

Now to answer the next question about the differences between the
Professional version and the Preferred version. The best way to answer
that question is to look at the reference that Mark put on the forum the
other day in response to a statement I made about the fact that I was
thinking of possibly upgrading to the Professional version one of these
days. I checked that out and it was very informative. I saw the extra
features you get with the Professional version and to me the only thing
I would really want is the macro-programming capability. And I believe
that with the KnowBrainer software you get more macro-programming
capability than you do in the Professional version. In fact there's no
question about it because there are over 10,000 free macros in
KnowBrainer and only a fraction of that in the Professional version.
The advantage of the Professional version versus the Preferred is that
you can create your own macros. However this requires some knowledge,
it's not all that simple. You can also create your own macros with
KnowBrainer but it's not necessary because there are macros to do almost
everything included with the program.

I still suggest that you buy the Preferred version first. If you're
happy with DNS and decide you want to upgrade to DNS Professional later
you will receive almost full credit for the price you paid for the
Preferred version because the upgrade price is lower than the standard
price. KnowBrainer will be just as useful with DNS professional.
