Vista still does not remember my folder settings (the option is

I have given up trying to fix this particular problem. The best I could
attain was for most Explorer-like windows such as Control Panel, Computer
etc. to remember their settings but actual Windows Explorer did not no
matter how many registry fixes and other remedies were applied. Then, and
for no particular reason, Windows Explorer started remembering its settings
but everything else started forgetting theirs. Now it's returned to the
first state. It's really quite pathetic. I have just grown accustomed to
opening Windows Explorer and resizing it as desired (again) and selecting
the appropriate view settings (again) every time I boot the machine.

So despite what others may tell you, there is no real fix for this problem.
People will tell you it has nothing to do with Vista and that your firewall
software is to blame. This is also bollocks as I have disabled mine for
some time and the settings still don't get remembered in a consistent
fashion. As to what part Aero plays I can't say as I have not experimented
with anything else.





What you described is Vista's legacy. ALL versions of Windows have and
continue to have deeply embedded bugs that remain unresolved. The
fanboy faithful pretend such things don't exist and do their best to
attempt to discredit anyone bringing them up or they try to quickly
dismiss the poster with something juvenile like saying all software
has bugs or you didn't install Vista correctly. Explorer being unable
to "remember" the settings you gave it is one such issue no amount of
Registry fiddling or option changing fully resolves. In can perform as
set for days, months even, then out of the blue change on it's own
with no warning or reason.

One of Microsoft's many creditability problems is they simply don't
listen to nor do they want feedback from the average Joe customer.
Therefore many unresolved issues remain, none so critical to make
Vista unusable, but it is the cumulative effect if you spend serious
time using Vista, that the sum of all the little annoying things take
their toll.

I put the blame where it belongs. Squarely on Microsoft. They simply
do not test Windows to the level necessary or rely on Bozos that don't
have a clue what they're doing.

Nothing shows this more than their poor implementation of UAC. While
the concept is on the right track, how it is implemented sucks. After
trying to get along with it for weeks when I first installed Vista, I
stumbled on a web page authored by Microsoft on how to adjust some
policy setting to override the annoying nag screens. I read the
article carefully, did as instructed, double checked and sat back to
see if anything changed. It did. Now if I go to Control Panel is
clearly shows UAC as enabled, but Vista being brain dead will randomly
pop up a warning telling me UAC is off and I should turn it on.

Naturally this is a cardinal sin of programming, give opposing
responses depending where you look, but such things are common to
Windows. If you use Windows this and the annoying Explorer issue and
dozens of other things is something you just come to live with.





My Explorer settings are persistent.
I set them right after installation prior to installing other stuff ...even before AV.
Have always done that...I get OS installed...do MB drivers, Video drivers, then Sound.
Set all that the way I like.
Get OS updates.
Defrag all that.
Then move on...one program at a time...the AV being first.

Don't use anti-malware apps.
Kaspersky is all I use.
Even Windows Defender is off.

And turning Kaspersky OFF is a simple matter of a right click/pause program selection


Yeah, and if your just installing programs, gotta have an AV to turn off and on before and after. Whatever floats your boat but why not leave it for the end? You're not going to get a virus while installing programs and you'll turn it off during the install anyway.
