2. An external hard drive is nothing but a regular IDE hard drive in a
USB enclosure. From the standpoint of "easy to operate" they are all
identical, since there is nothing to operate; you simply plug the
power cord into an outlet and the USB cord into a USB port on your
computer.

They are not even close to identical. External drives don't have to be
IDE. Newer externals may support the newer SATA-1 or SATA-2 standard.
They all don't use USB either. Many externals support Firewire and
SATA in additional to USB.

One caution about ANY external drive that uses an external power
supply and most do. NEVER simply shut them off once in use.

How stupid do you need to be. of course you NEVER shut off an external
drive once they are in use. Just like you don't shut off your Prius on the
FREEWAY, or do you need to be reminded of that fact? I'll bet you do
because you are such an idiot.

This can
corrupt data on the drive or in a worse case totally kill the drive.
You need to "unmount" the drive by clicking on the safely remove
option on the task bar. This will make sure the drive isn't reading or
writing (in use) PRIOR to turning off the external drive.

While claimed to be "portable" some external drives, both pre built
and those you put your own drive in might have very flimsy connectors
where the data cable is. Constantly pulling on this connector can also
damage the tiny circuit card it is connected to internally giving the
false impression the drive itself has "died" if it gets damaged when
in fact only the connector or circuit card has been damaged. If you
move these around a lot treat them gently when adding/removing the
connectors.
