With Windows, they gotta account for the bloat. With Ubuntu, I am running the latest version of Ubuntu on an AMD AthlonXP 2200+ with an old nVidia 6200 256 MB with one gig of PC-2100 (266MHz) RAM and it is smooth, rock solid and very quick. That's called progress. Windows is called "bloat".

Most people have sound cards ... bricked by ubuntu.

I have an on board sound card that works just fine. On another computer I have a Genius sound card that works just fine. Nothing from Creative will work but who cares?

Who cares what Video Card you have ... its useless in ubuntu.

It works fine and is very *useful* for me while using Ubuntu.

"Ubuntu...when you want less from your PC"

Vista: if you want to buy a new, more expensive PC when you could use Ubuntu on your old one.

ubuntu is good for old PC's ... you got that right.

It's good for new ones too. Vista is only good for some new ones.

All the owners of Creative sound cards care, that's "who cares" !

Time to move away from crappy hardware.

They have Creative X-Fi drivers for linux now...but you gotta hack the kernel.
Good 'ole ubuntu...a new headache at every turn !

Don't use Creative, simple. I have two Creative Audigy cards and a couple of Sound Blaster Live cards. Wanna buy them? With my hardware, everything installed right out of the box and I have yet to use a terminal once. Not one single headache. Just like Vista, one should research what hardware will go with the OS before installing it.

Don't use Creative .... LOL !

Now you're getting it.

I'm not taking about the crappy 2 speaker sound anyone can get out of ubuntu.

With the X-Fi you can get "actual" DD5.1 and DTS.
That's why people want sound cards.

You can get the left channel in 2 speakers and the right channel in 2 speakers, and if you like that, more power to you.

I may in the future buy a different sound card...but I seriously doubt being about to get "true" DD and DTS sound is gonna be availiable in any free linux distro.

Yawn.

If I had your sound set-up, I'd yawn too !
ubuntu does mono pretty good ! (not to mention "well", right?)

Mine does surround stereo. Course, if you try to use a Creative card and try to "hack" the kernel, no wonder you have problems. Again, LIKE VISTA, it pays to research hardware before installing *any* OS.

Who said I had problems ?

You did.

I can get 2 channel from onboard audio and the X-Fi.

"Surround Stereo"........LOL.
Contradiction in terms there, ubuntu guru !

My sound is in stereo and it is also in surround sound. Maybe if you look at the volume control applet in Ubuntu if you're not too busy screwing up the kernel with hacking.
