Found the answer…
On Windows Vista, go to Start – Control Panel – Personalization
On the right hand side, you should see on the column “Connect to a projector
or other external display” Click on that.
(A windows mobility center window will open) Look for the section that says
“External Display”
After you select connect display it should show on your TV or your projector.
To change your options –click on the “Connect Display” button and you should
see 3 options that will allow you to either:
1. Duplicate my desktop on all displays (mirrored) *My favorite choice
2. Show different parts of my desktop on each display (extended)
3. Show my desktop on the external display only *I was defaulted to this
option and hated it!

Yes, it's possible. I do this with my 3 laptops (3 different manufacturers).
when I want to show videos or movies from laptop to TV.
I can't tell you how to do it because each manufacturer does it slightly
different. Refer to the User Manual that came with your laptop. It should be
residing inside your Help and Support area. If you can't find info there then
you'll have to go to your computer manufaturer's website to find info.
But it's definitely posisble to display on TV plus laptop screen and
variations of that scheme.

Hello all,
I can connect my laptop to my computer and get sound and video with
absolutely no problem.
Where I run into my issue: When it's connected, the TV turn into the
monitor and my laptop goes blank.
(I believe I selected this option not knowing what the outcome would be when
my windows vista laptop was connected to the TV for the very first time).
I absolutely dislike that I have to work all my functions through my TV and
would like my laptop monitor to display a screen at the same time. Is that
possible to undo what I caused?
Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Have a wonderful day.
