Re: COD4 HARD Lockups

So I've changed my SATA drivers and ran memtest over night, updated BIOS and removed on-board sound drivers. I've enabled/disabled all of the devices related to sound. I've rolled back to older video card drivers as well as the beta ones. I've removed sticks of RAM and have re-installed the application as well as Windows. I've changed my name to not include non-standard character (I was using ^# for name coloring) and have manually un-installed/re-installed punkbuster. I've searched for a software conflict list for my programs and services and I don't have anything running that has documented conflicts. I've played the game in safe-mode with networking and have tried removing my router from the equation. I've checked server/pb logs and I don't see anything that would indicate a problem. Of course the windows logs don't record the event. I have a disabled a NIC port (since I have dual) and have plugged a mic into my input jacks. I've ran the program as administrator and every other little thing you can imagine.

Evo, are you using Direct2Drive's version of the game? I'm starting to get suspicious of their code now. /sigh. I also wanted to ask if you purchased your PC from CyberPower? Also, are you using Vista Ultimate? Are you using 32bit or 64?

One thing ive noticed is that my problem goes away on non-PunkBuster
servers? Ive emailed PB about this but no help as of yet, I guess theres
software conflict somewhere along the line.

No, it happens in most of my PunkBuster games and only occurs on

Times have changed? It seems we have the exact same problem, lockups in
PB enabled servers only. Your last post makes me feel much better as it
seems there can be no better person on the case of this problem (I would
have never got as far PB logs and such).

I was literally on the verge of purchasing a GTX275 and RMA`ing my 4870
as I found that lowering a few settings in the Graphics menu solves the
lockups.
It seems there is no specific graphic setting that needs to be disabled
in order for the lockups to go away. I say this because I put every
setting in the Graphic menu to its lowest value and raised them one by
one until I locked up.
I got to the last two options "Model Detail" and "Water Detail" which I
also set to high, this resulted in a lockup (as all options were maxed
out), so what I did was turn all the other settings down to their lowest
value and leave "Model" and "Water" on highest hoping I would still
lockup as that would indicate the problem, but I didn't.

Hope that made sense and sorry for the essay but I feel every detail
should be made known so we can solve this together. Give the above a try
and see if u lockup EN4CER, very time consuming I know. Basically run
CoD4 with "Model Detail" and "Water Detail" on low and see how u get on.
What I struggle to understand is how lowering graphical settings is
related to PB, it just makes me think there is more than just one factor
causing those lockups.
