If, say, I choose "white" for the color, all the white pixels will become transparent in the PNG image (and it is not the other way round). So we can export to PNG with transparent areas.

In Visio individual shapes (or even just parts of shapes within
grouped shapes) can be transparent, you can also make whole layers
transparent. This allows one shape to be seen through others. The
transparency can also set from 0 to 100%.
With PNG/GIF it's a colour index which can be made transparent, the
transparency doesn't make other parts of the image visible, but any
other image behind.
