You need to add the custom properties to a text block to make them display.
Rather than editting each shape, modify the masters and use Insert Field to
place the Custom Properties in the new text block. (You can do multiple
Insert Fields to a text block.)
As Al suggests, if you place this new text block on a different layer, you
have the option of toggling the display of the custom properties on or off.

I'd like to use the custom properties that are already defined for the
server
shapes.
How do I get these custom properties to display on my visio diagram next
to
the shape.
I know I can create a text box and just type in the info but that seems
like
extra effort given the custom properties are already defined.

I have a server diagram for which I want to enter certain data (i.e.
CPU,
OS,
etc.). I found these items already predefined in Custom Properties.
Questions:
A) I want to be able to toggle on/off whether I view these properties
next
to each shape. I don't want to have to click on the shape in order to
see
the custom properties.
B) I want to be able to select whether or not the custom properties
along side each server each time I print the document.
How do I accomplish these two items?
Is there some other functionality available besides Custom Properties?
Is
there a way to use Layers to help me accomplish some of this?
.
