Thanks Al. Helped improve my understanding of the US political system into
the bargain.

Hello Mark,

Well I've posted an example this weekend. It comes in two parts. The
first is main functioning example, which you can find over here:

http://visualsignals.typepad.co.uk/vislog/2008/06/linking-org-chart-images.html

..and the second is the technical explaination - over here:

http://visualsignals.typepad.co.uk/vislog/2008/06/using-the-visio-event-monitor-tool.html

Hope this helps, but let me know if you have any questions.

Best regards

John

John,

Thanks for the info. I hope this capability will be added to the next
version of Visio.

They say that "no good deed goes unpunished". If you are working on an
alternate version of this, could you make it so that one can
(optionally?)
grab the shape type from the spread***. It would be nice to have the
full
panoply of shapes available.

Thanks again for your help. I look forward to your new version of this.

Hello Mark,

The answer is no, not out of the box. You can do this with code and
there's
an example from David Parker over here:

http://groups.google.co.uk/group/microsoft.public.visio.developer/browse_thread/thread/2f77659e64abf9fd/fc4b419dfd14d09a?hl=en&lnk=st&q=Visio+Organization+Chart+Pictures

As David points out using the SendKeys function is "not pretty", but it
does
work. I've also had another look at this and found a way to attack the
problem without the SendKeys method and will write it up in a blog post
over
the next day or so.

Will post back here when it's availble, but I hope that helps in the
meantime.

Best regards

John

I have an Excel spread*** with data that I am using to create an org
chart
using the Visio wizard. Is there a way to automatically include a
picture?
That is, if I included a column labelled "photo" which contains the
filename
of the person's picture, can Visio automatically include that photo
in
each
person's box just as it can include other variables like phone
number.

I am using Visio 2003, but could get access to later versions.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Mark.
