I putting together a floor plan, and i have created a bunch of rooms, and i
want to be able to fill in colours for different rooms, so we can show where
different group will be allocated to.

Also, is there a way to have the square footage of the room automatically
get calculated and be diplayed in the room that i have just drawn?

You can do both jobs in one go. Just drop a "Space" shape on the
diagram and adjust it to suit your room. That will give you a display
of the room's area. Now you can change that the Space shape's fill
colour and pattern.
