I'm doing a course with the UK's Open University on project management,
and
have been using Visio 2003 quite a bit. In so doing, I think I've found a
whole area of diagrams missing from the templates, namely
'activity-on-arrow
networks'.
These networks are flow charts that are used to show project management
dependencies and time durations, and have a specific set of conventions of
nodes and connector arrows.
The nodes contain text boxes that show an identifier and the earliest and
latest event times, plus in some cases the actual achieved time. The
British
convention (BS6046) is to have the node divided into three - a left
hemisphere, and two right quarters. Some other node conventions include a
hemisphere and two quarters arranged vertically, or the node divided into
four diagonally. Finally, the connector arrows are labelled with duration
below, and task label above -the line preferably to be horizontal at the
point of labelling.
I searched online help for ages before giving up and assuming this stuff
didn't exist already - please disabuse me if you can, or comment on the
suggestion.
