resolve error message

I am trying to create a new Master object which comprises a pasted bitmap
icon and a text box. Every tme I try to add connectors to either of the
objects I get the message "operation failed because connection points are
disabled" appear.
What do I do to enable connection points on the object? All protection
settings are disabled and the objects are not grouped.
