I think by default it is English because of how historically Usenet developed.

We have

That's because it would be totally artificial and redundant to have a dedicated English language group if the international group is as predominantly English as it is. These hierarchies develop pragmatically, and, as you say, historically: It's true that Usenet started in the U.S. and therefore in English, but that doesn't make posting in English a requirement or even the "polite" thing to do -- just the most practical.

I have to say I have intense sympathy for your position. The fact that Usenet is mostly English, and how English is prevalent as 1st langauge for many countries and 2nd language for many other countries is a result of history. I never wanted this but it fact that wont go away.

I think it makes perfect sense to have English as the predominant language in the international groups. It's the broadest platform by far, and everybody wins. All I'm saying is that we shouldn't discriminate postings that are written, for whatever reason, in a different language. For most languages in the world, there is no dedicated language group, and the international group is the only place to go, even if the chance for a reply is smaller. (BTW, I guess in the OP's case, it was simply an accident.)

If things really work out for me, I will be married to a wonderful German woman.
Then I really will have to learn German

:-) Well, best wishes then for you both!
