Pretty much my feeling. There's no market for linux skills because everyone assumes that
linux is free and all the software is free, so why pay anyone to do anything?
The cost of a Mac is still too high; I looked into iPhone app development but I would have
to buy a Mac, which wouldn't work with my KVM switch; I can't afford a Mac laptop and
won't buy a desktop. So I think I've passed on the iPhone world.
Microsoft should pay *serious* attention to the IBM lessons. IBM began to tell us how the
best way was to do anything, and as their vision of how we should work and our vision of
how we should work diverged, their sales plummeted.
The latest "we know better than you do how you want to work" attitude is hurting them.

screens are too small and they just don't do enough to be interesting to me.

It's not Linux that's killing Microsoft. It's their own weight and
arrogance. "We know better" attitude. Extreme slowness in fixing issues
and moving forward. And lack of adult supervision.
Linux *is* killing Microsoft in terms of licensing costs. Already
netbooks are becoming popular for Internet-oriented tasks, and Windows 7
isn't going to run on them. If MS isn't careful, they are going to follow
IBM in continuing to charge too much for something that isn't of value any
more --- with IBM it was mainframes after PC's became popular, and with
MS it's desktop OS's and programs after web apps become popular.
