Bore da Joe
[Good morning.]
Depends on what part of Wales you're talking about...I'll be teaching in Newbridge,
arriving in Cardiff. As of tonight, I may be staying in Caerphilly, but that is not yet
settled. So you're probably more than 30 minutes away from where I'll be (but if you
really are reasonably close and want to do dinner some night, send me private email and
I'll send you contact information)
When they say "the castles" they usually mean the ring of them in N Wales built by Edward I to contain the Welsh in Snowdonia - of which Conwy, Caernarfon, Harlech are the most spectacular examples. It may not look far (esp. in new world miles <g>) but Wales is basically a chunk of mountain with roads going round them. And no motorways at all outside the South. Nor indeed railways. So they are not exactly easily accessible from S Wales with or without a car :-( Come to think of it, that was the point of building them :-)
OTOH Caerphilly has a nice castle http://www.castlewales.com/caerphil.html which is slightly older even (built by a mate of Henry III) and I wouldn't miss that if I were there.
(I live a few miles to the east of the northern end of Wales and know the Snowdonian castles well, but have never been to Caerphilly.)
Have fun,
Dave
