IMHO, the Add (control-related) Variable screen is the single worst feature of the "new" IDE, and always dropping you into the code window after each addition is the worst of the worst.
A modal dialog should exit back to where you came from, which in this context is usually the resource editor. Getting rid of this one feature (surely a trivial task) would in itself be a huge improvement.
But really the whole screen needs to be junked, and replaced by something resembling the Member variable tab of the VC6 ClassWizard.
