I agree with your sentiments.
Cross-posting should be reserved for those very obscure questions that are difficult to get any response from at all. At best, it can generate a cross-group discussion, but at worst, it can be almost as irritating as multiposting. And if it is a very obscure question, I don't think the regulars mind a multi-post, because they understand the situation.

I often find that cross-posting turns out worse than multi-posting. For example, if you cross-post to both
microsoft.public.vc.language
comp.lang.c++
the thread will very likely run into a buzz-saw sooner or later. Throw microsoft.public.vc.mfc or comp.lang.c++.moderated in there and it's pretty much guaranteed.
Better, in this case, IMHO, is "customized multi-posting".
