when we had 16,000 byte main memories but gigantic 2MB hard drives, ca.

Yes, I have learned in school several alghorithms for sorting big
amounts of data (more than memory). I can probably put something
together since I still know the principles, but I don't remember
any names.
And I sure Tom knows about these things too :-)
But the initial comment was not serious. Just giving a spin for fun,
to show how simple stuff is not always simple :-)
