I don't think it's a secret that VC++ is the BEST way to do native or mixed (managed and unmanaged) applications.

BEST is subjective, but I think I'm going to break that secret. For me it was better to do mixed by using C# for the managed part and VC++ for the native part. MFC and ATL are still going to remain necessary for the same reasons as always.
