Re: Internet Access trapped by Norton etal

Joe,

I know what your saying about the Norton dialog. I had never seen it come up
minimize either and I've been using it on a lot of different computers. But
believe it can happen. Have no idea why but it's not something I can fix.

The problem is that when Norton blocks the internet access you don't get a
normal time out from MFC because you never get out on the internet.

Also I don't want a user to see a message explaining his security
responsibilities unless there is a need for it. So I only want to post a
message in the event that this occurs.

My only thought was to set a timer myself.

Thanks for your thoughts, their much appreciated.

Well, given the security software is doing its job correctly, I see very little to
complain about here. At least some security software can be configured to allow specific
connections to specific Web sites, and it would be appropriate when installing your
application to inform the user that they should configure their firewalls to approve the
specific connection. If they do not configure their firewalls correctly, it is not your
problem.

I question the concept of a dialog coming up minimized; I use the Norton firewall software
and I've never seen this happen.

The best way to approach this problem is to document, as part of the install process, that
software firewalls must be configured to allow a specific connection to a specific site,
and that the software will simply not work correctly if this configuration is not done.

it is not your responsibility to figure out how to configure firewalls. Usually, this is
not possible, because if you could do it, so could various forms of malware. It is the
end user's responsibility to decide that he or she trusts you enough to allow such a
connection, and configure the machine appropriately.

Our application must access the company website to authorize use of the app
the first time the user starts it. A problem occurs when installed security
software intercepts the request and will not process it until the user gives
approval. Normally this would not be a problem because the security software
throws up a dialog to get direction on how to handle our apps internet
connection request. However sometimes the dialog comes up minimized and the
user is unaware of it. This gives the impression that the app is hung (may
even look like the pc is hung).

Has this scenerio been solved before?

What is the best way to approach it?

Thanks, Neil

PS: if this is the wrong forum can you suggest a more appropriate one?
