Re: VC6.0 SP6 BUG ?

This sounds like a headache. Thanks, if I ever have to install VC6 again,
I'll make sure to install both SP5 and SP6. Assuming I still have SP5
somewhere around....

Hi David,

I posted the following a while back after Dragon Naturally Speaking
refused to install complaining that the version of PDM.DLL was bug
ridden. I was puzzled because on another machine it did not complain.
I tracked it down to the section containing this file having been
dropped from SP6. So I just made it my policy to install SP5 first
and that made Dragon happy.

The missing section that Dragon cared about was this:

[environment]
"javale_dll" =
1,os\system\javale.dll,,,,2000-07-15,,1033,OLDER,,,,,,,230861,SYSTEM,,,6.0.0.8424,
"mdm_exe" =
1,os\system\mdm.exe,,,,2000-07-15,,1033,OLDER,,,,,,,124200,SYSTEM,,,6.0.0.8424,
"msdbg_dll" =
1,os\system\msdbg.dll,,,,2000-07-15,,1033,OLDER,,,,,,,69120,SYSTEM,,,6.0.0.8424,
"pdm_dll" =
1,os\system\pdm.dll,,,,2000-07-15,,1033,OLDER,,,,,,,183574,SYSTEM,,,6.0.0.8804,
"scriptle_dll" =
1,os\system\scriptle.dll,,,,2000-07-15,,1033,OLDER,,,,,,,179121,SYSTEM,,,6.0.0.8424,

I addition, there were huge sections relating to Visual J++, Visual
Fox Pro, and Visual Interdev that were dropped. I don't use those so
it didn't bother me at all. Those were dropped because their life
cycles had ended, and therefore their support.

=== older post ===

I wasted some time trying to figure out why the corrected PDM.DLL
which first appeared in VS6-SP3 and was also included in SP4, and SP5
was dropped from SP6. The fine print for SP6 says that because of
"Product lifetime issues" the fixes for other parts of Visual Studio
v6 which are not VB6 or VC6 were not included. I am wondering if
dropping this fix was an oversight since this bug destabilizes the
browser and causes severe issues with voice recognition and other
timing critical applications.

The workaround is to install VS6 and SP5 before SP6. You must have
kept a copy of SP5 since I don't think that Microsoft makes this
available anymore.

Does anyone have any more information on this point?

Hi Jason,

Some things that were originally in SP5 were "deprecated" and not
included in SP6. I always apply SP5 first, then SP6 to pick up those
items. This may fix your particular problem, or it may not.

Wow, this is the first I've heard of that. I've always thought newer
service packs were supersets of the older ones, so we could be assured
that
SP6 had everything SP5 did. Certainly MS never documented we should
install
both. Can you be more specific about what was not included in SP6?

Thanks,
David
