Probably similar to XP being eXPerience. AFE just didn't sound cool enough and couldn't have been confused with a substring in virus checking program.

Application Framework eXtension was what I was told. Then marketing decided that since it
didn't contain the word "Microsoft" it couldn't ship, so they renamed it MFC but of course
hndreds of thousands of lines of code were already written in it, so they function names
coudn't change.
